Alva Day visited the Fry Meadow guard station in 1947. I am happy to see this beautiful building still exists. It’s in the Umatilla National Forest.

Chief Joseph country.
An area where winter arrives early and spring arrives late. With no natural boundaries, the Native Americans moved freely through this area that is now separated by a Washington and Oregon border. Not far away also is the Idaho border where the Grand Ronde River empties into the Snake.
French fur trappers were in this area in the early 1820’s.
I am always in awe, how isolated early settlers and ranchers were, in this area.

Is that additional buildings in the background. And it rather looks like fire hose laying in the road.

I don’t see any other buildings, but I do see the car! I’m going to say a 1937 Chevy sedan.
