Notes
1904 was one of the years Hood River had an agricultural fair. The Liberty Home Orchard displayed their fruit at that fair as well as in St. Louis, as you can see by the caption.

It’s always nice when your away from home and find something from home. Back in 1982 I took a trip back to Michigan to visit my brother and he showed me a gallon of canned apples that had the Hood River label on it.

One year, we left for Alaska, just as the cherries were ripening here. I was not happy about missing out on cherry season.
Got to Anchorage and the grocery store had "Fresh Yakima Valley Cherries". They were green and yukky. That decided me as to whether I wanted to live in Alaska or not.
Hard to beat our fresh local fruit.
Wish I could see the labels on the boxes.

My great-grandfather also shipped apples to St. Louis. He went a step further and went himself. I was unaware of this until I found where he had gone to Peoria County, Illinois where he was born to visit relatives he had not seen since leaving the area in 1878. It stated in that article that one of his cousins went with him from there to St. Louis to the fair where he had apples on display.

I was in Florida visiting my parents a few years ago. Lo and behold! Duckwall fruit in the Publix grocery store. I knew it was Duckwall, because the fruit was wrapped in the tissue paper and the fruit was yummy as always.

This doesn’t have to do with fruit, but in 1965 I flew into Newark, New Jersey and walked into the terminal and at the far end the entire wall was done in a blown up version of that famous photo of Mt. Hood from Lost Lake. Always finding things of our area, like that.

It is amazing where one finds HR fruit boxes….McGrath’s in Cedar Hills has a Duckwall box up on one of the display shelves…..a few weeks ago one was in the Polar Bear exhibit at the Oregon Zoo. Fred’s marketing is extensive……
