Historic Hood River
Frazier Family
9-8-2020

Notes
This family portrait really grabbed my attention. Notes on the reverse indicate “Sitting, Grandfather Frazier and Grandmother. My Mother standing. Uncle Joe Frazier left my father right.” It also says, “Margaret Tuffly Frazier” and “Joseph Frazier Sr.” Can someone fill us in on this happy looking family?
Charlott
The elderly couple are Joseph Frazier Sr. who was a Canadian from Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was born there in 1835 of a Scottish father. He was married to Margaret A. Tuffey who in 1847 was born in England. Joe Jr. was born in Lodi, Minnesota when the family lived there. He was married to Bernice Foley from Lane County, Oregon. Joe Jr. did not live to be an old man, as he died in Hood River in 1927.
If one knew who originally owned this photo it would be fairly easy to figure out who her mother and father were.
This photo was taken prior to 1921, as that is the year that Joe Sr. died. His wife lived until 1941.
Fraziers were a farming family over in the area of Rorden Hill.

I live on the corner of Riordan Hall and Frazier Dr. Thanks for a little historical information of folks from the area.

The daughter must be Lavina, who married Carl Galligan. They had a daughter Patricia. Carl passed away in 1944 and Lavina later married Glenn Marsh, in Hood River.

From the historic property inventory of 416 10th Street we find that Joe Jr. was city marshal in 1920, residing at 409 State Street. He died in 1924 possibly of complications of influenza. His widow Bernice lived at 416 10th Street after his death.
Joe Jr. had 5 sisters, so the photo must have come from one of their children. Interesting that two of Joe Jr’s sisters lived to 100.

The couple in front are my great grandparents. The woman in the middle is my grandmother Margaret Frazier Galligan. Her brother is on the left and my grandfather Hubert is on the right. Lavina was my grandmother’s sister. Lavina and Margaret married brothers Hubert and Carl.
Joe Jr. actually had 7 or possibly 8 sisters: Margaret, Clara, Lavina, Alice, Katie, Annie, Mary and one not named. There were 3 boys: Joe, Fred & Dan.
My grandfather had 3 brothers, George (who my mother was named for), Carl and Wilbur and one sister Nora. My grandfather’s second wife was Lola Graff Galligan.

Thanks for straightening out the genealogy, Norma. It’s always fun when family members step in to interrupt our sleuthing.

And it is always great when family members can step in and add some actual facts. Thanks Norma.
So the guy on the right is actually a Galligan, not a Frazier?
Norma
L.E. – Yes, they lived on Dethman Ridge. In addition to being an orchardist he owned a nursery. I think the name was True to Name. He was born in PawPaw, Michigan. In 2004 my husband and I visited his relatives that lived in that area. I could not believe how much PawPaw reminded me of Hood River – apple orchards. No wonder the family chose Hood River to move to.
