Notes
Another fine football team shot, probably from Hood River High School circa 1930s. Check out the game face on some of those players. Someone will have to dig up their names and record from some old yearbooks.

These older photos always amaze me because of the protection devices or in most cases the lack of them. These guys were rough and tough guys, a lot of them having worked hard all summer on the various farms in the valley.
My guess is this would have been practice, due to the various outfits.
I vaguely recall late in the 1940’s going with my Dad, an avid football follower to some of those games.
Buzz, did you ever go to school and play ball with John Chipley? His father was a good friend of my Dad’s and here just a few years ago I ran into his sister and we had a nice visit.

Yes this is from the old Hood River High School … I remember that field from going to a lot of the football games there while I was growing up. Brother played in the 1964 championship game against Vale. That was a mud hole that day cause we had to roll off about 4 inches of snow from the field the morning of the game.

Charlott, John Chipley was a senior when I was a freshman. Attended a class of ’56 luncheon a few years back and visited with him. By the end of my freshman season I played right end on the defense practice team against the varsity offense. John was a big kid-played tackle-and left me battered and bruised many a day. But all in fun and John was a nice guy.

Judging from the 2 pictures I have of Bob Dethman, it is possible that he is the fellow in the dark uniform next to the guy on the far right.

According to the Oct. 15, 1937 White Salmon paper, Columbia Union was beat by HR 32 to 0. The HR players listed are:
Steele, Smith, Wirrick, Gilbert, Jensen, Kilbuck, Samuel, Dethman, Bentley, Koberg, Hunt.
I can’t find enough information to confirm these guys might be part of that team.
If you have the time, google the Kilbuck family. Very interesting family. Bob Dethman was quarterback for the Beavers when they went to the Rose Bowl in 1942. Don Samuels, played for the Beavers and Pittsburgh Steelers, but he graduated from HR in 1942, so he might be later than this photo.
Is #7 a Yasui? Perhaps Robert or Homer? Homer had to quit football his Junior year because of a heart condition. The Yasui brothers had quite a history with sports, despite a big major interruption in their lives.
In the same newspaper article, the HR Jr. High football team is listed. Iwakari, Schuler, Sheldrake, Crenshaw, Ito, Wilson, Varier, Roku Yasui, Smith, Mohr, Lindly, Leneque, Canfield, Arnold, Hukari and Hess.

I happen to have a team photo of this team. My grandfather (the far right) is Fred Kinoshita #7. On the back of my picture, most of the team is labeled. I can give most of these guys names, but not all of them. But from the best of my knowledge, starting with #7: Fred Kinoshita, second from the right, Cliff Anderson, 3rd, Person from the right: Unknown, Middle: Malcom Ordway. 3rd from the left, Cliff Vostroff, 2nd from the left, Doug Button, and on the far left, #15 Jack Tomlinson.

Buzz, I will have to get the football scrap book out that Dick kept. Don’t recall what all is in it, as haven’t looked at it for years…….HRHS field could become a pig wallow that is for certain…..

I wouldn’t call many football fields back in the day pig wallows. How about "character builders".

Fred Kinoshita was at HRHS between 1929 and 1932, I believe. The library downtown may have yearbooks from that time.

My memory is that Rainier was a "hog" wallow; nothing but mud and us bench warmers "got" to do push ups in the mud as "warm" ups…..the.HRHS field was at the upper end.

Oh yes, Rainier, that is where my husband fell on a Rainier player, down in the mud and broke his leg. He felt very badly about it all his life. In fact he went back the next day to see the poor guy in the hospital.

Bob Dethman was my Mother’s uncle. I would truly enjoy info about him and his family from Hood River. I was born and raised in HR as a Green.

Teaching Honors Chemmsitry at Palma High School( Christian Brothers) in Salinas, Ca and coaching junior high school track – retired from high school track in 2005. Actively involved with Concourse de Elegance at Pebble Beach for the past six years. Celebrated 41st wedding anniversary.
I had dinner with him back in 2007 when I was at Laguna Seca raceway.
