Historic Hood River

We had a question last week about flooding at the mouth of the Hood River, so here is an image of the May 1948 flood down at the dike/ railroad bridge which at that time was the only dike in the Hood River flood plain.  We’ve seen this exact spot many times, such as in this image.  I think the ferry only docked there at high water, so we’re comparing normal high water with extreme high water.

This regional flood caused far more damage downriver, where it is known as the “Vanport Flood.”
