We don’t see nearly as many images of the “working” end of Oak Street as we see of the rest of it. By the 1920s this end of Oak was filled with various automobile services such as this “Battery and Ignition” shop, as well as gas stations and general automobile garages.
The image is dated to 1928. The 1928 Sanborn map show the brick service station but no wood frame building on the corner. It looks like it’s in the process of being demolished in this shot, so the date is probably pretty close.
Unfortunately I can’t read much of the fine detail on the signs. Above the Coca Cola billboard it says “Coopers ??? Cleaners” with a phone number, but that’s the limit of the resolution.
I wonder how the folks from 1928 would react to seeing this same corner with a bagel shop, a surf shop, and a cannabis distributor?

Is that tower on top of the building or behind it?
Clicking on the 1st Street tag…I think this is another view of the building in 1921.
It would be interesting to know if those shop words existed in the 1928 Hood River vocabulary.

I’m gonna guess that whomever built that battery service building is the same person that built the sheppard’s building that is located right next to the gas station. They’re almost identical.

Thanks, RHD, I knew that building looked familiar. They were basically back to back. I wonder if any of this building is hidden behind the siding of the Gorge Surf House?

The concrete building housed in later years Moore Electric. This was the business of Max and Arline (Winchell) Moore. We have seen numerous photos from their album. I can’t remember if their business took up the entire building. I do know that the office portion was on the far left. I also remember that back of the office was their parts room. There might have been another business on the far left, but don’t know. It is obvious that the building was greatly remodeled to accommodate later occupants.
Grandma Moore would totally flip out if she knew there was a marijuna store next door. But then on the other hand she would have worked tirelessly to see that marijuna never came into Hood River…..

The sign looks like "Coopers Wardrobe Cleaners Phone 3564". Anyone have an old 1928 phone directory? Or maybe check the Glacier around this time.
