Joe Young took a nice series of nice though somewhat staged photos showing the Fire Marshal conducting routine fire inspections. Without a carbon monoxide detector this faulty duct work could have been very dangerous.

That is one huge heating system. Anyone got any comments on it?

well… we used to call ’em an "octopus". As this one partially shows, the body, and the "arms". typically wood fired box, flue to the chimney, and the ducts with the warmed air to the rooms. judging by what appears to be a poured concrete chimney, probably a commercial establishment. I don’t think the lawnmower provided the air movement!

I agree probably a commercial establishment, but wonder if the furnace hasn’t been converted to an oil-fired furnace. It seems pretty clean and would think with the price of oil by then it would have been a lot less hassle.Don’t have a clue what the lawm mower is doing there.

They used to burn sawdust too. Many years ago, we had a ‘stoker coal’ furnace.

Gravity heating unit- looks pretty clean- all white tape likely contains asbestos-
It appears the person with the flashlight smokes a pipe.

We called our furnace the monster in the basement. Coal fired then switched to oil. I found leftover coal lumps behind the furnace.
