Notes
It looks like Alva Day had plenty of help with this September 1953 construction project, leaving him plenty of time for photographs. True to form we have about a dozen images documenting every stage of this project. What were they building? They were adding this garage to his homes on June Street at 5th. They must have done a good job, because it’s still there.

The man squatted on his haunches, is such a familiar sight from my child hood. That is how my dad contemplated a project. He sat on his haunches and smoked a cigarette, then went back to work.
I would try and imitate him sitting like that, but tipped over. He told me it took practice. I decided the practice and aching thighs, wasn’t worth it.
Thankfully, he was totally against me imitating him smoking a cigarette, so I didn’t have to worry about kicking that habit, like he did in later years.

Is that a concrete mixing tray or a flat bottom boat? Pretty impressive if its a tray.

At first I thought it was a stoneboat, for dragging the concrete closer, but there is no rope attached, and not logical that you would drag that thing around full of concrete.
Notice there is another one turned upside down on the sand pile and one to the left of the big one.
I too am curious if that was a common container for mixing concrete, or if it is Alva’s fishing boat.

Those boat type things are for mixing concrete. They were mixing their mortar for between their blocks in it. Many years later, naturally, my husband had one, but it was made out of plastic. I use it in various ways when I am working in my yard.
My first take on the man squatting there was……all jobs have to have that side walk superintendent. In some cases I have seen many more….
