Grace shared Edna Plog’s college diploma with us today:
On June 4, 1923, Edna Plog was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the Oregon State Agricultural College. Home Economics was the most common degree for women at the college until the 1930s. For most of its early history, Oregon Agricultural College was free for Oregon residents; in 1923, the college introduced a student fee of $5.50 per term, which is equivalent to $107.79 today.
Oregon Agricultural College experienced several milestones during Edna’s time there, including the establishment of the college’s Horticultural Products Program (now the Food Science and Technology Department), the first in the United States; the debut of tennis; the establishment of the School of Basic Arts and Sciences (formerly the Division of Service Departments); and the debut of swimming.
Changes that occurred during the 1923 academic year at the college included the conclusion of all programs under four years, the debut of polo, the establishment of the Little Theater by the Mask and Dagger dramatic club, and the introduction of radio to broadcast educational programs throughout the state.

You know, the Plog family was probably no more prominent than a lot of families. But documenting the history of your family with labeled photos makes you prominent in history. Or so…I think.

Edna was a very nice lady. I can’t go up Plog Hill and seeing her house at the top, without thinking of her.
