Historic Hood River
East Side Grade Revisited
9-23-2026

Notes
We first saw this Benjamin Gifford image of the east side grade twelve years ago. I’ve cropped it tighter and adjusted the exposures so it’s a little easier to see the fine details. It’s such a familiar view, yet it feels so different.
It’s hard to imagine climbing that grade with a team of horses and all that lumber, but then again it’s hard to imagine making that grade in a 1910 automobile.

Beautiful photo, but his steering wheel is on the wrong side.

This was just when right-side drive was starting to fade out in the US. I bet being right on the edge like that made it more uncomfortable to drive up that grade.
