Here’s a nice portrait of E.R. Bradley, who in 1905 published the Hood River Newsletter, which later became the Hood River News. Alert readers may also remember he was briefly editor of the Hood River Sun, when Sloan Shutt left for Granite OR.

His full name was Eben R. Bradley, along with his wife Sarah, as Canadian born.
He was the grandfather of Fred Bradley who worked for the post office in Hood River.

A newspaper was pretty noisy when the type was being set. I can’t quite describe the sound, kind of a tinkling but not really. I toured the H.R.News twice when I was on the staff on the high school news paper. They printed our school paper.
A friend of our families brother, Stewart Turnball, was the type setter. The noise of the news paper didn’t both him, as he was deaf.

The contraption is a line-o-type machine used to set type using lead slugs.

My grandfather was Fred Bradley. His father was Robert Snodgrass Bradley. His mother was Nancy Roxann Fish. Fred father was a blacksmith and Fred worked contracts with the postoffice. Judd Fish was the son of Walter Fish who’s wife was Catherine Leabo. Judd ran the Hotel.
