E. M. Holman and his team are hauling a wagon full of apple crates at the corner of 3rd and Oak Streets in 1907. We know E. M. Holman owned a grocery store in the Heights at this time. The face in this picture is a solid match to his photo in the grocery store. According to The Hood River Glacier he was selling groceries as early as 1902, and was in a partnership with his father and brother by 1905. It’s unclear why he was hauling a cartload of either apples or apple crates in 1907, as we have no evidence he was an orchardist. Perhaps these were for retail sale at his Heights store?
This image also offers a good view of the Hood River Banking and Trust Company building as well as Cram’s dry good store.
The absence of the 1909 Eliot Building (NE corner 2nd and Oak) is consistent with the 1907 date.

These boxes are full?? That’s a load for two horses! What was the easiest route to get up to the heights back in the day? Or back down for that mater.

I like the thought these crates are empty— possibly a fresh shipment from the Davidson Box Factory. Those horses don’t look like they’re working very hard.
