This isn’t quite an aerial view, but it’s a good view of the dredge and fill operation which created the “new” Hood River waterfront. There are actually two dredges operating– the big one in the center of the frame, and a small one in the Hood River Harbor/ Nichols Basin. Based on the progress I would date this to sometime 1967-1968.

This is more like what I remember the Nichols Basin to be in the mid 1960’s. Notice the USS Banning has been repositioned compared to the 11/19/2024 full image scan. The 8/22/2013 image of the Port dedication in 1962 also has the Banning in this location, so I question some of the photo dates.
My Dad had a contract to remove trees growing on the Nichols Basin jetty in the early 1970’s. My Uncle Bob Vaughan was on the Port Commission and ran a dredge around the Interstate bridge, so it might have been his dredge, though he died in 1967.

During this time, I was often traveling through the Gorge on my way back and forth from college. In 1970, I moved to this end of the Gorge where all these changes were taking place.
I kind of remember it happening. But not really. Photos like this definitely help me remember.
I think it is a good example of,….. when changes are happening, take photos and date them. At the time, you might think it is ho-hum, but often times, it should be documented so we have memories.
