I know I’ve seen Dr. Pineo’s name painted on a second floor window in some old photos of Oak Street. Can anyone identify the location of his dental office? This portrait is from 1909.

H. Dudley Pineo had quite a list of accomplishments. He actually was from Nova Scotia, where he was born in 1880. His first dental office was in Boston, but he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest when he came to the Lewis and Clark Expo and found Hood River to his liking. He was a 1st Lt. in the dental corp during WWI, but returned to Hood River. His wife’s name was Delphine and they had one daughter, Margaret.

I’m sure it must have been up a narrow staircase in one of the brick buildings. That is where my scary dentist was located when I was young.
And his name was painted on the second story window so that it was scary to even walk past the building.

Just curious Arthur, what is the small "wall portrait" photograph hanging on the wall on the left?

The name of the bulding escapes me, but I’ll say it is upstairs in the building where Hood River Stationers is.

I remember…the E.L. Smith building! and I base my guess on the shape of the windows.

Could it be the Keir Bldg? Several Dentists were located above Keir’s Drug store. I worked for Dr. L.R. Alexander, beginning when I was 14 and continuing while in high school. Dr. Hutson and Dr. Ireland also had offices upstairs.

I remember Dr. Ireland. He had the bluest eyes. I was very young when I went to him. Probably before 1st grade. His office was upstairs probably above the Keir’s Drug Store.

I shutter when I hear the name Alexander. Absolutely no "bedside manner" with children. I think we went to him a VERY few times before it was more than enough…….Lots of children, now well into their adulthood experienced the same thing from him…….

The picture on the wall Connie asks about is actually some sort of motto. It has 3 words, which though they are pretty clear don’t make much sense to me: "A Dedosit Work" There is a little glare, so it is possible it actually says "A Deposit Work," though that doesn’t make much more sense to me.
For now I’m with rwf on the ID of the EL Smith Building (SE Corner Oak and 4th). The windows match well, and we have a photo from the same period which says "Dentist" in the 2nd floor west window. Note the windows have since been redone so they no longer project out onto Oak.

I do not believe this is the E. L. Smith building for two reasons, my parents along with Vawter Parker and his wife, own this building for over 30 years. During this time, they had historical research done on the structure and the people who worked there. I read this document and there were several dentists but it didn’t mention Dr. Pineo. Also Dud and Delphine Pineo were my Godparents; so if I had read about where he practiced, I think I would have remember if it was "our" building. Is the Eliot building on the north side of Oak street?

Any way you look at it….it is scary! When I moved to Hood River I went to see Dr. Jackson…..he was also a scary dentist!

I am thinking it is the building where H.R. Stationers are. If you go on the side street you see these sort of bay windows. That is my best guess.

The 1911 phone book shows Dr. Pineo in the Smith Building. By 1920 he had moved to the Elliot Building, but this image is from 1909 so it must be an interior of the Smith Building.

Grandma, Dale Roberts, was one of Margaret Pineo’s best friends. When Margaret passed away, grandma inherited a number of Margarets personal things. These have been passed on to me, and I cherish them. They include, a pair of gloves, an old pink velvet and lace shawl, and a snood, all from the teens and twentys.

Did anyone notice the lady sitting in the chair? I’ll bet she was not happy to be there. She didn’t seem to want her picture taken either.

Dr. Ireland was my father in law, yes he did have the bluest eyes, so do his kids and grandkids and now great grandkids.

I found an image of the Smith building with Dr. Pineo’s name on the upstairs east window on Oak Street.

From the February 15, 1906 page 7 HR Glacier:
Dr. H.D.W. Pineo who is a dentist, has decided to located in Hood River for the practice of his profession. Dr. Pineo formerly practiced in Boston, Mass., but has become so imbued with admiration for the Western country and Hood River in particular that he has decided to make his home here.

Could it be the Hall Building? I think that’s where Dr. Ireland’s office was.
