Dr. E. T. Carnes was an early dentist practicing in Hood River from about 1894. In 1907 he had a full time office upstairs in the Bartmess building. He passed away from “consumption” (tuberculosis) in 1910, shortly after his 39th birthday.

Reminds me of Doc Holliday………..So sad.
The E. T. stands for Edwin Thomas, born in Illinois. He came to Oregon and in Portland did his dental study. In 1897 he married Martha Gatchett and they had one son Clarence.
He had had T.B. for a very long time and fought valiantly against it right up until the last couple of weeks.
He, his wife and son are all buried in Idlewilde.

Wonder, did he get TB from his patients and did he then spread it to others. We are so lucky that we have found solutions to so many of what were formerly death sentences – TB, polio, measle, mumps, chicken pox, rabies, etc.
Still to go, malaria, cancers, …..
