These members of the Hood River Fire Department appear to be demonstrating the flammability of everyday clothing. I wonder if those garments are some of the synthetic materials which were gaining in popularity in that era. Photo by Joe Young.

I remember when women's nightgowns and children's pajamas would catch on fire. Usually from standing by a woodstove. In the 1970's a law was passed to put fire retardant in the nightwear. Then it was discovered the retardant caused cancer.

Quite sure that is Jim Meyers, fire chief, on the right. Good idea to test with snow on the ground.
