I think this Howard Jones photo is from the 1937 Apple Growers Association fire. We previously saw it in this image. I had to stare at this one for a while because there are small differences in the window configuration. I think the previous image was the NE corner of the building, and this is the SE corner (5th Street and Cascade Avenue).

What a devastating fire to a community. Was a conclusion reached as to what started the fire?

L.E., the Hood River News will have an article about this fire in their next Kaleidoscope section (first week of January, I think). They’ve been digging through the 1937 coverage so maybe they will answer your question.

Does anyone remember what year the replacement to this building burned? I think it was mid 1990s, but can’t find a solid date.

I thought this was interesting….from the HR News coverage December 31, 1937.
"Had it not been for the heavy rain and the almost entire absence of wind, it is doubtful if the business section of Hood River could have survived, for large masses of flaming debris were carried on to roofs of residences half a mile beyond Oak Street, only to be extinguished by the pelting rain."
