We haven’t looked at an Anne Lang portrait for a while. I like the way this one hides so much detail in plain site. I didn’t notice the bunnies, the dog or the hatchet on first viewing. We’ve actually seen one of the boys, the dog, and the bunnies before.
I suspect this was taken on a visit to Portland. The five story building in the background looks a little to grand for Hood River or even the Dalles at that time.

I have always wondered what the theory was behind little boys with the sailor collars.
It looks like the little boy, second from the right has some sort of fuzzy animal/fowl in his hands that moved.
See the pan back there, that must have held water for the dog and maybe the other animals.
At first I thought "Bermuda Shorts" for summer, but then recalled little boys of that age all wore short pants. They are all very well dressed that is for certain.

If you see a five story building, you must have cropped something out or maybe it is that blurry thing in the far back ground???
But that’s OK, because this is a really interesting photo.
I saw the hatchet right away, but missed the animals.
The clothes line looks like it extends clear over into the neighbors yard. That’s a big clothes line.
If I had a zoom, I could see what the 1890 clothes pins look like.
Even the shrubbery is interesting.

From the May 8, 1891 The Dalles Daily Chronicle, a story about Miss Anne Lang, on a train trip between Portland and The Dalles, visiting with Senator and Mrs. Harrison who later became President Harrison.

A real happy dog…..don’t bother me with pictures….nap time. Dressed very nicely but no shoes.

When young, adults used to make us cousins wear shoes to church once a week. Hated them.
