Historic Hood River
Dee Highway?
2-22-2021

Notes
This looks like the Dee Highway to me. Alva Day shot this in 1948, on a day we know he went up to visit the city’s water source near Lost Lake. It includes a caption, “Looking North. 2:15 PM 3-26-’48.”
Before you ask me, the sign next to the railroad says, “RAILROAD.” The text on the mailbox? “BOX”
I was just looking for a representative stretch of the Dee Highway in a Google streetview, but this crossing could in fact be the correct spot.

Arthur, that seems to be a very good match!
Kyle
Yep that looks like the spot.

Wish I owned that car!!!!!!

I wonder if the clear spots on the distant hills are from clear cut logging or for orchards?

I don't think the google location is the right spot.
Go ahead on up the road a while in google view, and there's a pickup by what looks to me more like the crossing in the old picture.
First clue is that the railroad and paved road are too far apart in the first location. They can get closer together over the decades, but hard to move them further apart without leaving traces.
Second is that “my” guess at location has the mailboxes in the same place, and has some tree matches.

I agree with Alan.

Alva Day would love the new location guess. Lots of power poles and wires.
