Notes
What a wonderful crowd showed up for Decoration Day events in 1928. The crowd still included several GAR veterans of the Civil War, who started the annual springtime tradition of decorating graves of fallen soldiers back in 1868. One familiar face at GAR events was missing, though. Samuel Blythe passed away May 20, 1928 at age 86. I am sure his comrades decorated his grave this day.

Earlier this month, Anne Markgraf Ward gave a talk on the Klickitat Co. Hendryx family. Nathan Bethewel Hendryx was a member of the HR GAR veterans of the Civil War. He passed on Jan 25, 1908. The funeral was held at White Salmon in charge of the GAR. He was buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in White Salmon.
Because of what I have learned here at Historic Hood River, I knew what the GAR was.

Definitely Idlewilde. Know Pine Grove was a briar patch in that era. Then Arline (Winchell) Moore took the bull by the horns so to speak and got the cemetery association going.
Today we think those who served their country. I went to Idlewilde Friday to take my flowers and we all need to give a BIG thank you to Bob Huskey for the effort he has put into it and the way he maintains it. I know for years it really irritated me to go there and see how un-kept it was.

The real spelling is Idlewild. Most people add an "e" on the end. Check it out with Bob. There were a lot of flags this year. The whole ceremony was beautiful.

Cousin Bob certainly does a fine job, he always makes the programs very special.
We number amongst our family dead, at Idlewild, 1 Union Civil War Veteran, 1 grt. grandpa born in 1865, at Ft. Marshall, Maryland, before the close of the Civil War, whose father, was the Surgeon, in charge of the Fort Hospital, 1 Oregon Coastal Artillery Company Veteran of WWI, and one Navy Veteran of WWII.
All were descended from Revolutionary War Veterans, save 1.
