Notes
This is the Odell Grade School 9th (or 8th?) grade class from 1935. We have many school pictures like this in our collection. I usually transcribe as many names as I can so they become searchable, but I thought I’d leave this one to crowd sourcing. Anyone want to pick a line and try to transcribe the names? I suspect we have some relatives of readers in this one, so let’s hear whose Mom or Granddad is smiling back at us across the years.
And if you’re a relative of John Weber’s, you might want to look around to see if you can find his Mickey Mouse sweater. I bet a vintage sweater like that is worth some money!

Even though I never know anyone in these older school photos, the names and faces are always interesting.
And the clothes!!

I know about a few of them.
Bertha Moilanen was the daughter of Elmer and Lillie Moilanen. A sister to Alice (Moilanen) Swyers. She married Raymond Downing.
Martha Jarvis was the daughter of Harry and Palma (Hagen) Jarvis and married John Weber.
I am guessing that the Blanchard’s are the children of the teacher.

The reason I probably don’t know as many as I should is that I grew up in Pine Grove. I do recognize some of the other names as old Odell families.
Now I recognize another.. Frank Hachiya. He was one that served his country to help maintain the freedoms that we know. He was killed at Leyte on 3 January 1945, but his remains were not buried here in Hood River until 1948. One of our unsung heros and we need to salute him!!!!

Just think how much of a valued antique John Weber’s shirt would be worth?
Boys must not have liked long sleeve shirts, as the majority of them have the sleeves all rolled up. Maybe that was the style.

Yeah probably 8th grade. Notice all the cursive writing….,nowadays, it would all be printed, no doubt. Cursive writing is still taught, 3rd grade, but not really used, even the teacher usually prints her/his directions on the board. The lost art of cursive writing…..!

Not being around then, I do recognize some names. I know that Pat Allegre’s Dad is in the picture, but can’t identify him. Maybe someone could contact Pat. He drives for UPS in HR.
