Meet the Crosby family of Odell. Pictured are (L-R) Gladys, Gertie, Don, J.R., and Anna. I date this to about 1900, when Gladys (left) would have been 6 years old.
Anna’s maiden name was Post and she was born in Wasco County.
The son Don was a signalman for the O.W. & R. and N. Railroad in The Dalles. His wife was Violet Maskier of the Maskier family of Klickitat County, Washington.

J. R. was John R. Crosby and he farmed 45 acres. Anyone heard of the Union Church in the Odell area? That was very near where his land was.
The daughter Gladys Belle married a Charles Hamilton.
What happened to J. R.?

Brrr…I bet they ran back indoors and stood by the wood stove after the photo was taken. Neat house. It looks new. Is it still standing?

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering, if it’s still standing? Looks like good ol’ stacked rock foundation, and seems odd to have the "shed" style back (kitchen?) that appears added on, yet by siding and windows, would have been built together. But zoom in on the roof, really interesting break at the dormers, obvious in the valleys; appears in the building process it would have been "capped" with the top six feet or so around the chimney. Must have been thru a summer, screen door is already braced wide open for winter!

That is what I was wondering Charlott. History links say John Reuben Crosby was born in Maine and died in 1937 in Maine. It doesn’t even say if he was buried in Idlewilde. His wife Annie is.

I live in a house that was built around that time, and it has the same tall, narrow windows. My neighbor’s house had the stacked rock foundation until he jacked it up 10 years or so ago and replaced the entire foundation. Remarkable how stable the old foundation had been. I still have stacked bricks along one basement wall.

Don Crosby died in 1918. He would have been only 31 years old. I wonder if it was flu or war related.

I wonder if the house didn’t get siding until it had been there a while and had the shed addition added to the back. Having some age on the house might explain the odd step in the roof covering at the dormer level as well. Just from the way the snow is lying on the various roofs, I am guessing the shed addition is to the south.

The 1930 census shows John Crosby as father in law and living with the Caugheys. I would be skeptical about the accuracy of the map, but a map shows the home as sitting at the junction of Odell Highway and Kusisto Rd.

If this house was at Kusisto Road it is long gone. Since it didn’t have much of a foundation that would be a possibility of limiting its life. Looks like a etched glass window in the door. Those were so beautiful. Grandpa and Grandma had one in their doors.

Well, I printed out a copy of the picture of this house and went for a look see. I think the house is still there, it is at 3801 Wyeast Drive. the roof is sadly very different, but the west wall looks surprisingly just like it does in the photo. There has been an addition added to the east side which makes the front longer and the front door has been moved. The chimney is still centered in the older part of the house.

I think that John R. went back to Maine after his wife died in 1920. He came from a town called Searsport in Waldo County and he died in Waldo County in 1937.
The house up on Wy’east could be the one, but never heard of any churches up that way. If we could find out the exact location of the Union Church we would have a good idea where it was.

It appears that the Union Church is that little old white church across from the old Odell Grade School, up behind what used to be Weber Brothers. There is an article about it, if one wishes to read it….just do a search for Union Church, Hood River, Oregon. This puts the Crosby place then mighty close to that church.
