I always enjoy seeing the Crooked River High Bridge on the drive down to Bend. This Alva Day view was taken in 1949. I didn’t realize this bridge was designed by Conde McCullough, who is responsible for so many of the classic bridges on Highway 101 at the Oregon Coast. He also designed the Dry Canyon Creek bridge on the Columbia River Highway near Rowena Crest.

Very fine engineering….., erector set like. This bridge was replaced twenty some years ago, with a new on to it's east. Stopping at the Wayside overlook there gives one a good 'birds eye' view of this bridge…..and the deep gorge of the Crooked River.

If you drop a wooden kitchen match off this bridge in dry weather it will ignite on the way down.

Yes, this is the bridge the two women threw their kids from. That was always the scare for kids like us growing up in Central OR!
