This is a detail from a W. F. Laraway image we saw before, showing the steamer Chas. Spencer at Hood River. I ran across this Hood River Glacier reference to the ship’s refurbishing that had a wonderful detail: the stack was painted crimson red. It’s a good reminder the world was always in color, despite these old images hiding it from us. I also like the detail of the whistle. It looks like it had three different tones which I bet set it apart from the other ships calling on Hood River.

Charles R. Spencer was master of his steamboat and started a bank in White Salmon and one in my community of Glenwood and one in Goldendale.
He died at the young age of 29.
