Historic Hood River
Crater Rock
6-24-2025

Notes
This Sawyer postcard of the 800 foot dome called Crater Rock near the summit of Mt. Hood shows one of the newest features on the mountain. In fact, Crater Rock is almost twice as old today (~240 year) as it was when this postcard image was captured. You can learn about the recent volcanism on the mountain from this Wyeast Blog post or a more academic view from this paper.

Beautiful and serene to violent and deadly.
The two eye witness accounts, 1859 and 1865 were interesting. I had not read those before.

What is the cause of the pattern of striations in the snow, not being a mountain climber?

Any idea of what year the photo would have been taken? I am left wondering what type of camera and gear would have been lugged up the mountain to take this shot.

kmb, Sawyers studio started producing postcards in 1911. Most of the cards I see from that studio are closer to 1920.
