As the Crag Rats approach the 100th anniversary of their formation we’ve been looking through their collection of photographs quite a bit. This one seems a little too polished to be an actual rescue– and there’s the big smile on the “victim”– but regular practice for mountain search and rescue is fundamental to the organization’s activities. Based on the Hood River County Sheriff’s vehicles I’ll suggest a date of 1970s. I’ll bet we can refine it a bit and identify these Rats.

I’ll start with identifying a few of these Rats-
In the background is Sheriff Gilmouth and Rob Hukari.
Far side of the akija, L to R is – ? , top of head?, Glenn Marsh ( rocking the sideburns), John Arens senior.
In the foreground, L to R, on this side of the akija is- Elwood “Tweet” Samuels,
Les Hukari ( my Dad), Alpinee member Cranston Fosberg?, young man?
In the Akija looks like young John Arens Jr.
I don’t recognize the other Alpinee by the Sheriffs crummy.

I love their well known shirts. To me…those plaid shirts say, “We are the Crag Rats and we are here to help you”.
