I can give you some of the names:
Front row left to right:
John Siverkropp, Kennth Wells, _________, Bill Cochran, Bill Sheppard,
Middle row: # 2 Eino Annala, # 6 Percy Bucklin, #7 ___________ Laurence, and #8 my Dad Harold Wells.
Back row: #7 Sulo Annala and #9 George Howard Sheppard and #10 might be Bob Fuller
There are some more Annala’s and Hukari’s in there, but can’t figure ouit which is which. Bill Pattison get busy here.
As to the date, just a guess but I think it is prior to WWII, just from the ages I figure these men were. I am also looking at Bill Sheppard’s boots there.
It was taken at the old Crag Rat Hut. The door went into the hallway and eventually outside. The window is into the kitchen and the staircase went up into the loft.

Laurence’s first name was Irwin.
That is definitely Bob Fuller and he died in about 1943, so this is about the era I thought. I know he and my Dad were close and used to climb a lot together, as my Dad always spoke of him. No, he didn’t die in the war….
I imagine that T.J. Annala and Norm Shrum are in this photo, but can’t quite figure it out.

Yes the old Crag Rat Hut was there just off 84. You can still see the old fire place.
For those of you who might not know it, the Hood River Crag Rats are the oldest search and rescue organization in the United States.

Nels, that is a long handle ice axe, and I believe some old crampons at the base of the handle of the axe.(adze and pick)…..!

Yes, he was a wonderful Dad. Taught me and my brothers so much about the beautiful nature we are blessed to be part of. He taught me so much about history, local and general. Miss him greatly…………………

Since I didn’t see a photo for the Mazamas, I thought the following entry would be good for the Crag Rats.
The Hood River Glacier, June 2, 1894
Arrangements are being made for a meeting on the summit of Mt. Hood, on July 19th, for the organization of an Alpine club. Only those who are present at the organization will be accepted as active members. A banquet will be spread in the summit at the time and every endeavor made to have the occasion a pleasant one. The club will be known as "The Mazamas."

Dear Cliff McArthur,
Your grandfather Frank Simpson found my uncle in Punchbowl Falls in July of 1932. He had been searching for him for several days.
My uncle was 11 years old at the time, and out with either his class or his Scout pack. Several classmates/Scouts/friends saw him get pulled under and tried to save him, but the leaders were afraid of losing more children, and stopped them.
As your grandfather was a Crag Rat, he perhaps had many stories to tell, but still, I wonder if you ever heard him say anything about Jack (or Jackie or John) MacGregor? Did he write anything about his experiences?
