Historic Hood River
Cooling Off
6-6-2023

Notes
Hot weather sends much of Hood River searching for a place to cool off. Devil’s Punchbowl has been a popular choice as far back as we have records. This view is from Samuel Blythe’s collection, circa 1900.

Looks different than it does today, or at least how it looked when I was there last September….this must have been in the spring with high water flow.

Brave visitors! Just getting down to that ledge is daunting enough, but one slip and you’re in a very scary splash pool with a massive undertow! Tribal fishermen use this spot today — there was even a traditional wood platform roughly where these women are standing a couple of years ago! This section of the West Fork is closed to non-tribal fisheries.
