Historic Hood River

This is one of those images which takes a little effort to read.  I think it also shows the artistic eye of the bridge designer, Elbert Chandler, who I believe took all these photographs of the construction progress.

We’re on the Washington shore in the late 1930s, lined up with the new concrete piers which were being constructed so the roadway could stay above river level and cross the BNSF Railroad tracks.  Construction is in progress in the lift span tower.  There is a temporary bridge truss just to the west of the bridge to allow traffic to continue to use the bridge as the new approach is constructed.  You can also see the old Washington approach which curves toward the site of the old White Salmon Dock.  I am guessing it was being used for construction access.
