Historic Hood River
Columbia River Highway Dedication Plaque
4-8-2015

Notes
This 1967 photo shows the dedication plaque of the Columbia River Highway in its original location at Shellrock Mountain. In 1969 is was moved to Starvation Creek. The plaque was stolen around 2000. ODOT replaced it with a replica. They are now considering moving again when construction brings the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail by this original location.
The plaque reads:
Construction of the Columbia River Highway begun here in 1912. Funds were contributed by Simon Benson. Labor was performed by honor men detailed by Governor Oswald West.
You may remember this photo, one of my favorites, which shows that event as it happened.

Cool name, ‘honor men’, slightly misleading I suppose………!
