This fine Weister photo of the construction of the Columbia River Highway arch bridge over the Hood River comes to us courtesy of our friends at ODOT. There is so much great detail to study. My favorite is the detail of the old bridge which just peaks out underneath the new approach. I also like the Button house and barn up on the bluff. Anyone have an idea how those two construction towers were used?

Abutments for the two bridges still exist on the east side

RR scale house on the Mt Hood RR. Two rails are for the car being weighed, the other two are bypass rails.

This “photo” has an interesting quality in that it looks like a fine pencil drawing more than an actual photo. Or maybe my eyes are just getting bad 🙂

I was questioned about the east side abutments, they can be driven to by going south under the RR bridge.

kmb, the exposure does give this an ethereal quality that makes it look more like artwork than a photo, but I can assure you it is a photo. I can see fine grain detail which would not be possible in a pencil drawing.

Sorry we lost this bridge but thankful Grants Pass still has a similar 1931 concrete arch bridge over the Rogue River ( should not admit I was at the dedication). I assume Olga crossed into town on the earlier steel through truss that is now the Robertson bridge several miles downstream.
