The caption claims this was the state of PPE for orchard workers circa 1925. Given the evidence of the rest of our collection, I believe this person was much more prepared than typical. Most of the images we have (like this one) show people in everyday work clothes spraying highly toxic chemicals. If I were spraying the “universal insecticide” Corona Dry (arsenate of lead) I would be in a full haz-mat suit.

My Dad, Bob Bryant, was a commercial spray applicator in the 1960’s. He later developed Parkinson type symptoms, possibly from the sprays.

Bob told me of driving the tractor to spray fruit trees before he went to (high) school in the mornings. No protective gear.

Jim, we have a Windmaster spray gun in the museum collection too. It looks so simple, but I know there were years of experience that went into designing it.
