Historic Hood River

Notes

As Hood River’s Crag Rats approach their centennial this August I’m scratching my head how I’ve never shared this 1927 image of the charter members.  Here they are:

I’ve been doing a little research into the stories behind these men.  At least half of them were orchardists.  You can see by the names many were related (mostly brothers).  Andy Anderson was the manager of Patrick Coal downtown, and he met Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office in 1979.  Fred Donnerberg was a photographer and captain of Hose Company #1 with the HRFD.  He held the record for a Portland to Hood River trip on his Excelsior motorcycle of 2 hours and 45 minutes.  Mace Baldwin and Percy Bucklin worked together at the First National Bank, and William McGuire was a WWI aviator.  Bill Cochran was manager of the Homestead Inn.

In this image they seem to have adopted the “polar explorer” dress of the age, rather than the black and white checkered wool shirts.
