This isn’t that long ago and doesn’t seem that different, yet almost nothing in this image is the same today. The toll plaza has been completely replaced, the toll is now $1, the Mid-Columbia Marine building has been completely rebuilt and now hosts Port of Hood River offices.

You are right. The scene looks so familiar, but that isn’t what it looks like today.
That is why photos are important. If we had to describe what it used to look like, we would have difficulty, but a photo is instantly recognizable.

I knew I had a photo of a toll bridge–dug it out, but it’s not the same one. This is Bridge of the Gods in 1934. Here’s the pic anyway…

Interesting that the pre-Bonneville Dam Bridge of Gods was a narrow wooden bridge.

The toll house for the Waucoma bridge, which will be occupied soon by Harry Connaway, is being built by L. M. Bentley. He is constructing the unique little house at the plant of the Emry Lumber Co.
