Here’s another view of the Oregon Centennial parade of February 14, 1959. Conestoga wagons must have been in short supply as similar parades were held all across the state. No word on whether other cities had Fidel Castro look-alikes in their parades.

Now days, people would be terrified of someone packing a gun down the street.

Is that a smokestack in the background?

Yes, this portion of the parade was behind yesterdays picture, from what the clock says. That smoke stack looks like it might be the chimney of the Rialto theatre or if it is actually closer might be on the PP&L building.
Notice snow on the street, apparently they had had some recently or that was the left over of what snow plows had moved around.
Love that Ford parked over there.
This also give a good view of that old store front on the Pastime.

And I see the First National Bank where the previous photo of bankers was taken.

The yellow & white car is a 56 or 55 Mercury, slush on the streets likely from a snowfall that morning, the car ahead of the Mercury must be from the upper valley as there is a lot of snow on the rear bumper, maybe HRW can check on weather records and pinpoint the snowfall. Looks like the two guys in front are carrying antique guns.

There were many covered wagons around that year. Many people who had them went around the state going to various parades and Centennial functions. I don’t remeber details, but there was an actual wagon trail that came down the Gorge during that year. Where it started I don’t remember either. Pretty certain it was later in the year when the weather was better.

a relative was famous for years for driving his steam traction engine in Hood River Parades I am trying to find him in some of these pictures or written history his name was henry engels
