Historic Hood River
Camp Staff?
1-2-2020

Notes
Here’s another one of the “Campfire Girls” images Beth Hukari shared with us from her mother, Marian Gordon Hukari. The film was processed in May 1962. I’ll go out on a limb and suggest this might be staff at Camp Yallani? Does anyone have better information?
Charlott
Might very well be the staff. I am wondering if this could have been earlier than 1962 and the film just wasn't developed until 1962. The reason I say this is that two of the girls in the photo I graduated with from Wy'east in 1960. The gal in the back row on the right is Sharon (Paulsen) Beardsley. She was in my class.
The dark haired girl in the front left with the glasses in Pat Higgins. She was also in my class. If this was a 1962 photo it would have meant that they were at Yallani during the summer, because they were in college in 1962.
Right behind Pat Higgins is Judy Mellentine (don't know how to spell the name) She was from Hood River. Next to her , with the blonde hair is Karen (McPherren) Paddock and next to her is the youngest Carr girl.
Buck Parker
I believe the woman kneeling in front with the rolled-up jeans is Katie or Katy Joseph, who taught biology at Hood River High School.

And I believe that Buck is right, that is Katie Joseph who taught at HRHS.

Is there any further history on Camp Yallani, year founded, by whom, how long,
possible statement of purpose?

Susie Irwin
I think Miss Joseph was camp administrator in 1958 or 1959 as I was a counselor under her, and I think that was her first year. The girls in the photo are all younger than me, so 1962 sounds about right.
Cecelia Parker Goodnight
Agree with Susie about the years because I, too, was a counselor under Miss Joseph and think that was in 1958; This picture is probably the following year. Directly behind Miss Joseph, as Charlotte says, is Pat Higgins Adelhardt who has just written a memoir that is in HR Library and behind her is Judy Mellenthin Gaulke whose father ran the OSU Experiment station.
Having also been a camper at Yallani during earlier years, I hope others see this and maybe we could arrange some type of mini reunion and, as Nels requests, pull together a bit of history.

I'd sure like to see more Camp Yallani photos. I'm sure there were plenty of Brownie cameras in the bunks, but our archives are empty. It seems like it was an important part of Hood River life in the era. Start digging!
Arlen Sheldrake
the girl on the bottom right sure looks like Christie Murray (HRHS '59)…..Yes Arthur…an important part of HR history
Judy Mellenthin Gaulke
I think this is summer of 1959 or 1960. We all loved being there as campers then as counselors.
Judy Crenshaw of Hermiston is two to the right of Karen McPherren Paddock in the second row.
Sheila Ford of Hood River is second in from the right side in the first row.
Gail Hayman is either to my left in the second row or just behind me. Dorothy Parson Marx must know the rest.

The lady kneeling in front of the group on the left side of the picture is Katie Joseph. She was the Camp Director the summers of 1958, 59, and 60. So the picture can't be later that 1960. The girl behind her, who has her hands on Katie's shoulders is “Butch” Higgens. There is also a Susie Mills in the picture. I got this information straight from Katie today.
Dayne Weatherill
Could the tallest lady in the back row, middle be JoAnn Oakes?
