Broughton Flume

Notes
This is the flume that brought logs to the Broughton Mill. Pieces of it are still visible along the hillside above SR14.
But we’re viewing it today for a much more important reason. This evening you have a chance to hear Scott Cook talk about his long quest to find copies of the Lassie episodes filmed in the Gorge. (spoiler alert) He was eventually successful. His presentation includes a screening of these rare episodes, including one where Lassie rides the Broughton Flume.
The Lassie episodes are OK, but Scott’s story of the search, including acting out key scenes between Lassie and Ranger Corey are not to be missed. Come to the Museum this evening at 7PM. Admission is $10. It’s worth it!

Scott is a great source for gorge information, his overall knowledge such as the flume and his very thorough trail book ~

Great picture, Drano Lake, the wire on the left for communication and flume failures and the three board walkway. It must have seemed very narrow when this far off the ground.. I hope Scott can tell us what the overhead structure is in the background.

I have been amazed at the tenacity Scott has to dig into the background and history of a story.
I guess the story of Lassie was no exception.
One minor correction. The flume brought rough cut lumber cants from the mill at Willard to the Broughton Mill where it was refined into merchantable lumber.

That looks like finished lumber, what happened at the Broughton mill?

No logs and no finished lumber, the logs were rough cut at Willard and the cants sent down the flume to the finishing / planing mill at Underwood.

I remember watching the "Lassie Rides the Flume" episode as a child in the late 1960’s. Had no idea where it was filmed. Drano Lake? Was this the start of naming public venues by corporate sponsorship? (…kidding)
