Historic Hood River
Between the Rows
7-14-2026

Notes
Alta Walter (later Alta Walter May) lived on a Hood River farm during her high school years. This image of their “potato patch” shows the practice of using the space between the rows in young orchards for other crops. We’ve seen strawberries and asparagus before, but never potatoes.

Yes, strawberries were what my Grandpa and two great Uncles in Parkdale planted in a young orchard. I remember Grandpa driving a bus to Portland and bringing pickers who also just happened to be winos to pick strawberries.
