Before the Checks

Notes
We’ve been talking about the Crag Rats “uniform” prior to the black and white wool checks. This is the best view we have of the WW I style parka fro the very earliest Crag Rats rescues. This is Bill Cochran, probably from the 1927 search for Calvin White Jr.

Would be interesting to hear an old timer compare mountain dress back then vs. current day mountain dress with light weight and synthetics used in today’s mountain gear.

At the anniversary party last week Christopher Van Tilburg talked about how the Crag Rats have recently switched from wool shifts to materials which are lighter and more easily washable.

I often think about how much easier Lewis and Clark could have set up camp, stayed dry and lighter portages if they would have had today’s synthetic outdoor gear.
Wet canvas is really heavy.
