Ballgame in progress at the old Frankton school. Rock barely visible in foreground was used in playing games– such as Old Witch. –per Bertha Madge Warren, about 1890.
Did any of you play “Old Witch” as kids? I’d never heard of it. Here’s one description, though maybe some of you can fill us in on whether there was a Hood River variant to this game.
We saw this school before in this image. It sure is an attractive building in a beautiful setting.

I’m getting good at this. I recognized the Frankton area right away.
From what I gather of HR history, Frankton was actually the more settled area until the Coe’s began selling lots in anticipation of the arrival of the railroad.
I wonder if someone actually had a baseball.

Hi, this is a great site to happen upon! We just bought the house across from the old Frankton School (460 Frankton) built in 1910. We are extremely interested in finding out if there are some old photos of this house or any history that can be given? I have heard at one time it was a dairy? Any info would be much appreciated!

Chelsea, my great-great grandpa Warren Miller owned the property south of Frankton School. In fact, some court papers I have said he sold the school some of the property it owns. His sons built the two houses standing next to it. One was by Bud Miller, the larger house Lester "Leck" Miller built. The outbuildings standing appear to be from Leck and Lenore Millers dairy they once operated. I don’t know if there was another dairy, but that one was adjacent to Frankton School. I have an old cowbell from the dairy and photos referring to their dairy. Warren ended up owing back taxes and they sold the houses, the farm/dairy in the 1930’s or 40’s. I am not entirely clear on dates and event time lines. Warren Millers home I was told burnt down. I have pics of it and of Frankton school. Not certain where Warrens original 1880’s home stood on that property.
