This is from the “you never know what you’ll find at the museum” category. I was flipping through an autograph book from “Josie” who apparently moved from Rockford Minnesota to Hood River. There were a pair of spectacular pen and ink drawings from Albert Kingsley, dated 1883. Seems like a good Valentine’s Day post.

Beautiful drawing. What amazes me is that everything is so precise and detailed. I love the little ladybugs in the lower middle. Good example of cursive writing and drawing I think. People of that era took great pride in penmanship…..I remember in my early school years of having penmanship practice on a very regular basis.

And who is Albert Kingsley?
Those look like potato bugs at the bottom of the drawing.

Those insects are coast line june beetles. You can tell by their odd littlemantlers that can fan out into several layers. I dont know why. My dadvas a boy used to harness teams of them with sewing thread and have them draw a matchbox. I ran into a horde of them one night at a gas station outside of LaGrand. My kids caught dozens of them in a paper bag to show grandpa ( Harold Parsons). They ran into his office at Webster Orchards near the Elks Club and opened the bag. The beetles swarmed out to the light en masse. Was Grandpa delighted To see the draft animals of his boyhoodvon a Utah farm? Not so much.
