Historic Hood River
Approach to Mitchell’s Point

Notes
This is a particularly nicely done postcard showing the western approach to the tunnel at Mitchell’s Point. Modern usage seems to be “Mitchell Point.” We previously discussed the lack of an authoritative answer on the point’s namesake.
The project to build a new tunnel as a critical connection of the Columbia River Highway State Trail began officially a couple of weeks ago. You probably won’t see dirt moving for a little while, but once it starts moving it should be interesting to observe. The last time Hood River residents got to watch tunnels being bored through basalt cliffs was 100 years ago. The project is scheduled for 2023 completion.
This postcard also offers a nice view of the Sonny mill. If you’ll recall that mill was fed by a flume which basically dropped logs off the cliff.

I am really looking forward to hiking that part of the trail.
