Interesting to me is the fact that their packing count per box is much different than it is now. The box on the left appears to be a 4 row pack throughout and 9 rows up. Making it a box of 144 apples if 4 layers deep. Now packs are generally 3×2 or in cases of smaller fruit some 3×3. I am thinking they must be presorting these to come out with even looking packs. Will give them credit as their packs are so neat in comparison to some I have seen now. Some packers now are only interested in ticking that computer for a count, not how their boxes looked. Should be more inspection as to presentation…..Another little packing note…….apples are now tray packed and not wrapped. Figured it out, the papers hanging on the walls are their paper liners for the boxes.
What is the barrel for…………………….cider already consumed?

On that table at left, I spy a wooden handle with a square shaft through it, meant to fit around … something, and turn it.

Looks like it might fit in that hole in the barrel.

What’s the lard for?

That is no doubt the cork thing for the barrel. The hole in it would be where you would stick something in to work it back and forth until the cork came out. As to the lard can, with the cup beside it means probably coffee or water. Could be someones lunch.

Didn’t someone tell us a while back that apples (presumably lower grade) were packed in barrels for shipping?

A possibility, but I have never heard of it.
