You probably recognize this man by now. He’s Alva Day, photographer who shot so many of the Historic Hood River photos. This is my favorite self portrait of his, and it’s here to announce a special opportunity which is sure to interest HHR fans. A special display of Alva Day photographs has just gone up at the History Museum. Matt and I cleaned up 20 of our favorites and printed them on large paper so you can see the details. Some are photos you’ve already seen on HHR, and some will be new to your eyes. You’re all invited to an “opening” this Sunday, November 3, 2-5PM. At 3PM Matt and I will be talk about the photo project, followed at 3:30 by Aaron Nice, who will be reprising his Cemetery Tales role as Alva Day. Admission is free, so come on down and join us.

It looks like a cable instead of rope holding up the tent, so possibly a permanent camping spot.

My first glance at this picture reminded me of a previous photo, which proved to be on 08-02-13. Do you know if that was also Alva Day?

Also, this photo of Mr. Day struck me as somewhat of a "show of arms". Possibly Mr. Day also has a little "urban cowboy" in his makeup.

His "leggings" look like they are made from Ace bandages, spiral wrapped around his legs for protection.

Has a backpack on. Trying to figure out if his jacket is leather, canvas, or just sturdy cloth.

I wonder if the jacket is a "Filson" jacket…..looks similar to the current cruiser jacket…..Filson was very popular over
100 years ago.

My husband says probably a 92 or 94 Winchester 30-30.
I think I have an old coat like that around here somewhere. It isn’t canvas, but a soft, heavy cloth. Now I’m hoping I didn’t throw it away.
Is that a spruce tree?

Wore heavy wool filson jackets for 20 years. Very warm and would soak up a lot of rain water before it soaked through. But the permanent creases in the arms of this coat are indicative of canvas. Used to wear what were called "tin pants" that were a canvas material and they creased like this coat. Kept out the rain and devil clubs.

Is this filson anything like the navy pea coat with the heavy wool outer?

The filson I used to wear wasn’t quite as heavy as a navy pea coat, but it had a double layer of wool across the shoulders and upper back.
