Alf Shepler certainly looks pleased to be at the helm of the ferry boat. Shepler’s stepfather, “Commodore” O.C. Dean, ran a ferry service across the Columbia. You can read more about Shepler here.
I can’t guess his age in this photo. In 1900 he was 18 years old and worked at Chenowith as a timber faller. In 1910 he lived in White Salmon and is a ferry boatman. The 05/11/1911 Glacier tells about him bringing a new ferry up from Astoria. The "Ollie S". In 1914 he builds a ferry on the Washington side. In 1919 Dean and Sheplar sell the ferry business. In 1920 he is in Hood River and works as a carpenter. The Ollie S has gone to Newport for halibut fishing. The 03/30/1922 Glacier tells about Sheplar building the ferry Cleona and is now engaged in building a smaller boat because of so much ferry traffic. 1930 and 1940 carpenter. Those years in Hood River he lived at 1322 Columbia Street. That house is probably still there. He passed away in 1964

Do you have any pictures of the "Cleona" ? My grandfather, John M Johnson, Sr was a co-owner of that ferry. We’d love to have a picture of it, if there is one available.
