Historic Hood River

Notes
We don’t have a firm date for this aerial survey of Hood River, but there are some clues to narrow it down. The Interstate Bridge is in place, so this must be after 1924, but the lift span has not been added, so it must be before 1937. To help you get oriented, the four major east-west routes visible are Columbia, Cascade, Oak, and State. You should be able to pick out the Hood River delta, Koberg Beach, the Columbia River Highway with its 1920 bridge, the Union Building, the Fashion Livery, the Mt. Hood Hotel Annex, and the surge tank from the Copper Dam hydro project. What else can you find?

Neat photo? Lots to look at. It appears to me that water access to the town, by large boats, would not have been easy during certain times of the year.

What is the lake on the north side of the railroad tracks? Is it a lake?

Maps from the era describe a seasonal pond and mud flats north of the tracks where we see a lake.

My guess is that the back water of Bonneville Dam took out some of the pond, plus building highways, etc. There is a portion of it between the current highway under Hood River Sand and Gravel.
