Historic Hood River

Notes
I don’t think I’ve shown this view of the corner of 2nd and Oak before because it makes me sad that someone would deface an image this way.
The back of the image says “Williams Pharmacy 1903” but that’s not correct. The “Light and Water Company” office in the basement as well as the electric sign at the pharmacy tell us this is post 1904. The Hood River Glacier tells us this building was ready for occupancy in February 1905. I’m not sure what year the building was extended to its present size.
First floor tenants include the Williams Pharmacy, Vogt’s Men’s Furnishings, and the phone company. Upstairs offices in the building are Dr. Dumble, Dr. Jones Dentist, and Dr. Smoot Osteopath. W.J, Baker and Co. Real Estate occupy a back office.
As Dr. Smoot doesn’t seem to have been practicing in Hood River after 1905, I’m pretty comfortable dating this image to 1905.

I can never remember which building is named for whom. The Brosius Building named for Dr. Brosius.

At least six cross arms on the pole, I assume all utilities in HR are now under ground ~

Urban renewal projects put utilities in the central business district underground starting at this intersection about 2000. State Street utilities went underground just 3 years ago.
