Notes
The Hood River Glacier borrowed this image from the Pioneer Association, presumably for publication in the newspaper. The editor typed this caption:
Family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hans Lage, taken in 1883. Mr. Lage, who after more than 50 years residence in valley, died in 1930, was widely known in circles of Oregon Elks, having been a member of The Dalles Lodge 303. The children, reading from left to right are: Mrs. James Henderson, Bingen, Wash.; Henry Lage, prominent in American River California mining circles; Mrs. Meta Scobee, Hood River; Mrs. J. H. Koberg, Hood River; E. E. Lage, local orchardist and former president of Oregon Irrigation and Reclamation Congress; and Ben H. Lage, local orchardist.
Someone later added the note “Baby Charles in front”.
Yet another note in ballpoint ink indicates “Picture taken Sept. 1883 at the Dalles Oregon to celebrate driving of golden spike on the railroad.” That note includes identifications of the people at odds with the IDs by the Glacier editor. I tend to trust earlier notes over later ones.

As far as I can see names are as originally posted.
Meta was marriedto a man by the name of Byrkett prior to Scobee.
Mrs. Henderson was the mother of Dr. Warner Henderson who practiced medicine in Hood River.
Mrs. Emma Koberg was of Koberg Beach fame.
E.E. was Edward Emil "Ed" who lived on the old family farm on Eastside Road.
Ben was the nickname that Bernard went by. He also lived his life in Pine Grove and was the father of Keith Lage and Lenora Merritt.
Charles, if I recall died when he was in college.
There were two other sons, Albert and William, both of whom died as little boys.
I love the little stripped socks, wonder what color they were? Maybe red and white?
I did personally know a number of these people….

Daughter Meta first married a young man from Trout Lake. They were living in Trout Lake when he died from pneumonia.
When Hans first arrived in this area he traveled to the back country of Klickitat County looking for land. He wasn’t very impressed. He was much more impressed with the Hood River Valley.

I thought I would include this link about Dale Scobee, attending Pine Grove Grange meetings with his mother Meta.
It also mentions the grange being moved, which was discussed a few photos back.

My wife Carol A. Lage is the Grandaughter of Henry F. Lage, the oldest son in the photo.
Henry passed away in Auburn Ca. And buried at Goodyear Bar Cemetary near Downieville Ca. There was no headstone to be found when we (Carol and I) went to the cemetary.
