Notes
I made a note last year to try and match our 1883 Carleton Watkins view of Hood River before the trees budded out and blocked the shot. I was a little too late.
I used the hillsides, the rail depot, and the Mt. Hood Hotel to align the views. The railroad tracks and bridge were shifted in 1906 to straighten out a sharp bend in the tracks, so they don’t help much. Quite a bit has changed in 132 years, but this still is a pretty nice spot to site a city!
Longshot
I had gone out last year and tried to get a comparative view and found it didn’t match up all that well, the realignment being obvious. Was interesting to walk along the unused old roadway down to the old highway bridge site. Nice exposure of river rock (Troutdale Formation?) where the old road turned to align with the bridge.

Have you seen the website that shows Europe 1944 and today? You slide your cursor back and forth.
When I saw that the other day, I thought that would be a great concept for some the HHR photos.

How about the three guys sitting on top of the bridge? And is that one climbing up a virtical girder below the guy on the left? Wonderful details in these old photos. I love the bridge photos, especially the old Tucker Bridge ones. I grew up on the river 1/2 mile downstream from there. My sister Linna just turned me on to this website. It was great to find the pictures of our brother Jack in the 1954 Wy’east photos.
