With everyone rushing to get their vegetable gardens in, this should strike a chord. These students are tending their “war garden” at the East Barrett school. It’s not clear if this is WW I or WW II, but perhaps someone who knows our local school history can narrow down the date range.

My guess and only my guess is WWI, because I think the brick Barrett School was there in WWII. The clothes also look to me like it would be WWI. Women were not wearing long dresses by WWII.

As a youngster, oh how I "loved" hoeing our rows and rows of corn…..but then cob corn is still on my favorites list. I would also guess WW 1. Arlen

The brick Barrett School was built in 1910, which was before WW I. Is there any significance to the note "East Barrett School"? Were there two schools on Barrett in 1918, or does this photo predate WW I?

Here is some history about the Barrett schools by Gladys Hinrichs, Sun Correspondent, who when a young girl, attended Barrett School.

In the above article, it mentions drinking water was brought by a student from his home.
Do you think they packed water from Indian Creek to water the garden?

Who knows where their water came from. Gladys Heinrich was one of the school teachers when I went to Mid-Valley Jr. High.

Looking through the archives I see there was a Barrett School and an East Barrett School, both single story wood frame buildings with steeples. This steeple matches the East Barrett School which was on Orchard Road, not the one which was replaced with the brick Barrett School in 1910. I have conflicting dates for when this school was in service.

The East Barrett school is still there on Orchard road, it is the house that Clarks lived in. I believe Mas Ogawa went to school there.

Apparently the early Barrett schoolhouse was moved to make room for the new schoolhouse.
